#7: Stuart Hall and diversity
My opinion on Stuart Hall's representation theory & hegemony.
I think that "power", mentioned by Stuart Hall, was evidently shown in recent years when a series of films such as Crazy Rich Asians (2018), Mulan (2020), and Shang Chi (2021) all approach the context and content around Asia yet only to be cited as misrepresenting or inadequately conveying indigenous culture and rejection from the continent's own audience. Why? The obvious cause is Hollywood filmmakers' lack of understanding of Asian people and culture. Instead, they built an Eastern world according to their subjective thinking, leading to the agglomeration or hybridization of inherently different cultures. Self-interpreting Eastern values through the prism of Western norms and values also causes them to be significantly distorted. It shows the sad reality of how few "actual - Asian" people are involved in these Asian-featuring films, in production process.
I would aim for more diverse representations of Vietnamese youths in my media product.
There are many reasons for me wanting such depiction of young people in Vietnam. Our generation - Gen Z are children born in the most favourable development period ever. Yet the new era come along with problems. In the present time, Vietnam is among the fastest growing economy, the change between two generation, ours and our parents, is undeniably great. That great difference is the reason why the previous generation's not able to understand the thoughts and concerns of young people nowadays - which in some way result in the lack of attention to the mental education in our generation. I believe that a lot of young people don't understand themselves, they don't know what they want. But many of them are not aware of this. Not only do their lack of direction lead many people to live aimless lives, some also feel lost, not being understood.
